The Cloche Hat

Loved all the hats in Downton Abbey and now we have a new Gatsby film coming out this year. Catwalks are full of flapper dresses and 30s gentle glamour. The delicate cloche hat looks charming again as seen at the Ralph Lauren Summer 2012 show. Now fascinators are to be banned from Ascot we need some fresh alternatives.

It’s been a busy time for The Fashion Cupboard – with clients wanting to find the just right things for summer parties. Though the stores are packed with clothes, sizes of the perfect dress tend to sell out very quickly. Peter Pilotto has been a winner with several clients buying his dresses, from Selfridges. A favourite of mine is Clements Ribeiro sold at Fenwicks and on line. They are adorable dresses that tick all the right boxes, length, fit, some with sleeves.  They will do a great job for Weddings, Ascot and all parties in general. The Louis Vuitton collection for Summer is amazing though prices are too. Prints or pastels are the top pick for this season.

Wardrobe tip. Those dratted moths are breeding, get busy with moth killer before its too late. I get my kit from www.pestcontroldirect.co.uk

Canvas Tote & Velvet Sneakers

Easter marks the end of a flurry of clients who need dresses for Parties, Weddings, Ascot etc. just as well, while the stores look stuffed with clothes, it is hard to find sizes at this stage of the season.   So I have been thinking about some divine casual accessories. Kick off the high heels and slip into a pair of Emma Hope’s yummy  velvet sneakers; no we can’t go on wearing velvet slippers all summer. Great colours, see web site. Emmahope.com easy peasy. Now for my faaavorite tote by Bananetaipei.com 20 colours all delish, canvas and photo print of well we don’t have to mention the “H”word I have one love it.  Always remarked on, easy to use and great quality.
Have fun fashionistas. The fashion cupboard is always at your service. Editing  your fashion collection, wardrobe building, searching for “that dress”

We have a wonderful well priced, young, fun high street, Zara, Top Shop, Cos et al. All the same I do recommend you have a look on line at www.jcrew.com. They now ship to the UK free, prices are the same as in the US plus import duties. I have just come back from the US and visited two J Crew stores. The styling is spot on, simple on trend and for summer wonderful colours. Their Italian cashmere collection really zings as does their take on the Equipment silk shirt. A bright cardigan will work all summer and into autumn as a default garment. Over a dress with trousers etc. day or evening.Even if it is a scorcher today, that cool front will be creeping up on us no doubt, so what’s not to like about a wisp of cobalt or tangerine cashmere. Other Fashion Cupboard J.Crew faves, blue and white striped cashmere sweater a luxe version of a sailor top. A new Pea Coat (jacket) I just love. As a basic the cashmere tank top is great I would like it in 6 colours. There is always a kind of fashion lull once the summer has got going, fashionistas are waiting for the new winter collections and are just adding summer funs or basics. So it is the best time to clear out and edit your wardrobes. I bet last winter there were clothes that didn’t just work for you and never will don’t fit, , too shabby. Out they go.

Invest in the best – A trouser tale

Now is a great time to start wardrobe planning for Winter! The sales are a good hunting ground for staples and trousers are a case in point. My clients say they wear them most of the time which means maybe 250 wearings a year.   To stand up to all this work a trouser needs to be well built a great cut. 6 or 7 pairs you love is ideal, some for flats some for heels. Narrowing to the ankle, straight, a soft wider pair for evening etc.

With designer trousers costing upwards of £200 its worth spending some time trying on a lot of pairs after all the right pair makes us taller and thinner.
A go-to brand is Theory, Helmut Lang and Theyskens Theory. All made by same company.

At the better price end of the market I have had success at Massimo Dutti, just don’t look at the rest of the stuff. Uniqlo and Gap are fantastic for everyday trousers the cut is every bit as good as designer lables but with less fabulous fabric. At Maxmara and Jaeger big choice of sizes, useful, Harrods Luxury Collections Room, houses Italian Brands that are classic and well, luxurious. A trouser that slims rather than clings the calf, we are not looking for leggings, is often a bit gapey at the back, get them altered in the store and you will have the perfect pair.

Just to give you something else to look for at the same time. A leather jacket as soft as a cardigan is ideal for autumn days and evenings to slip over a dress or jeans. The Theory group again, but there are a lot around and may be you will find yours in a sale this summer.  Happy Hunting.
